After looking over your diary again and seeing how nice your melons have turned out I've just ordered 150 pounds of action heroes and some undies just a bit more wild than yours in that 'on-the-potty' shot(hard to believe I could find something more wild I know). Nice tomatoes! I might try a big tomatoes next year. Hey question for you- I noticed you started your plants on one side of the greenhouse and you guys are always talking about the ‘main vine’. My plants are leaf-less now and I’m looking at the vines and they look about the same thinckness and the plants are basically round(same distance out in every direction) so what in the crap is the main vine and how do you get away with starting your plants off-center? Is the main vine just the first one that takes off? Also, have you noticed if melons do better when set on the main vine? Thanks, Kyle

The main vine is absolutely the first one that takes off. Sometimes a main will break or befall an accident and another vine will be designated as the main. The theory is the largest vine carries the most sap to a young melon and gets in on the path toward growing to a giant size better than a finger or secondary vine could. It is a subject that will be debated forever. You will find that any vine with a big melon on it will grow to extra large size. And growers sometimes have a very difficult time getting a melon set on the main.

The 260.5 was grown on a finger vine.the main broke early on in the season, the finger vine became bigger then the main.I dont think it matters where you grow them, just my opinion.
