With only a handfull of seeds that have produced a melon over 250 lbs is there a seed(s) out there that can produce a melon over 300 pounds? If so, will it be an older seed that is hard to find, a semi-proven seed that can still be relatively easy to get, or a seed that hasn't seen dirt and is begging to be asked for? Name that seed!

I think its out there already. Just like it takes a few years with the pumpkins to find a seeds true potential, so it will be with melons. I therefore think its a semi proven seed or a new cross made last year or this year just waiting to see dirt !

I may take a beating for this response, but here's my take. I think there are a ton of seeds, that will and can grow 300 pounds. There are just so many good cross's being made it's a cocktail of supergenes going on. To me it's 50/50, seed and grower. The seed is the easy part, the grower part is the tough one, with location, growing conditions, and weather, and weather, and weather! Not sure thats a answer, but if I had a jar full of 255's, I would plant a field full!

the seeds got to have the ability to grow for a long time 85 days. In the proven seeds, that says 255 or 239. Both have shown the ability to go the distance & keep growing. (i guess thats why they are ranked 1 & 2) After those there are several possibles but we need more grown to see what they are capable of. 267 edwards, 285 edwards, 291 kent, 113 kent, 165 cantrell, 252 neptune, just to name a few

What todd said is true, it takes the whole package. If you do something wrong, mother nature isn't kind, it wont matter what seed is planted, you will not pass 300 !

The 291 Kent probably would have passed 300 pounds if it had been allowed to grow for a longer period of time or if the timing had been better (earlier pollination). I am almost positive that both the 255 Mitchell and The 239 Leonard have the required genetics. And I certainly agree with Todd that there are probably lots of unproven crosses that have the potential to grow the next world record.I believe that it is going to take a very long post pollination melon to grow the next world record. Plan on an early start (a greenhouse will probably be needed if you live north of the Mason Dixon line) and doing whatever it takes to keep your roots and vines healthy and protect your melon in such a way that it won't rot prematurely (shaded and up om boards will probably suffice).

I agree with Todd, it is both for sure, and I am betting there are a lot of seeds capable these days as well. I just looked back at my 206 grown on the 222.4 Hunt and the fruit was still growing at Day 97 and so was the plant for that matter. I pollinated it on July 10th, so perhaps this is another hearty Canadian plant capable of the long distance. I will likely give it another shot, along with the 239 an 255 and my 206. Marv's 255 was a northern grown plant as well, perhaps there is something to it. I believe the greenhouse is key up her for sure as the last 6 weeks would have shut the plant down if it were not protected.

I think it will be the 291 Kent or the 260.5 Clementz that will grow the first 300lber.I think some seed lines have a few silver bullets that could do it under near perfect conditions. The 291 & 260.5 will grow several over 300 before its over as will some others. My 260.5 was grown in a cold summer, thats why Im convinced its a stronger seed then others that were grown under a great climatic season.

I think there is a few seeds that can go 300. Some of the new growing practice's help the plant and melon grow longer.
