Is it nessesary in more northern climates (i.e.southern ontario) if you want to grow a large mellon? (Didn't wanna highjack your post Phil and Bryan but would appreciate your input:)

You need warm nites to grow a big melon, something we dont always get in the north. You can hit the low 200s to 250 depending on the year.A greenhouse will only improve your odds.If we ever get some of this global warming in the summer the house would not be needed.

I started and finished under a plastic hoop house Joel, which I think is necessary for us to get these things over the 200 lb mark up here.

I remember a few summers where its so hot you lay in bed at night trying to get comfortable from the heat. You dont need 95 degree days to grow these monsters you need 65 degree nights. We dont see 2 many of these in the north, there not the common. The greenhouse really should be heated at nite, when we get in the high 40s & low 50s,Melons dont like it under 55.

We use plastic hoophouses in the spring, along with heating cables. In the summer they are out on there own. Once the cooler weather comes, you should have some protection. The warm nights are key if you want to get over 200#. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

I also have some seeds left from our 222.4. It grew Bryan's 206. Let me know if your interested.
