And the seeds are going in the dirt. I plan on starting 6 seeds in the greenhouse for transplant around 10 April into the patch. I will start 6 more later for transplant around 10 May for the SEP weigh offs. I have not decided on the specific crosses these are the first six I am planting:

274, 253 Kent
282, 251 Dawson
234 Edwards
260 Clementz

The big competition in Alabama is the 3rd Sat in Aug, most of the time the melons are still growing when I pull them. I also want to enter the Hope Ar. and Bear Wallow weigh offs this year which are in Sep.

Well hello fellow Alabama grower, would look forward to seeing you at the Franklin County Watermelon Festival. So how do you deal with the red clay? I drive through your area going to Montgomery all the time and it's nothing but pine country. best of luck in 2012.

I don't have a whole lot of red clay suprisingly. But after learning about this I might have to throw an extra watermelon or 2 out just to make sure.

The prize levels are $300 $200 and $100, around 160-170lbs will take 2nd place, first place is a litle tougher.
