It's OK Mark, I understand where you are coming from. I have a poor track record and a habit of shooting myself in the foot. But think about this and predict where you think I will finish. I have great soil this year which I have had tested twice. The aged horse manure seems to have worked wonders. I am off to a awesome early start and have already set my first melon. I have some great genetics I believe, although they are unproven. I have superior rootstock this year due to grafted plants. I am resolved to do a complete job this year with disease and insect control. I am using superior low salt growth stimulants this year from Growth Products. I have been getting great advice, especially from Nathan Okorn, who seems extremely intelligent and has acted as somewhat of a mentor to me this year. And I am determined to keep a level head and not do anything stupid this year. So do you think I will be able to make the top 100 ? My only regret so far is that I am not growing one of your 260's, as I much wanted to win that $100 you are offering for the largest melon off of it.Last year, I would have been somewhere around #21 in the club finish. And that was with untested poor soil and several other terrible mistakes I made and that I vow not to repeat this year. I think by July you will have me in your top five. By the way, I think it is just crazy to make a public prediction like you just did. You are really stirring the pot and stepping on peoples feelings. I feel anyone with enough commitment and resources can break into the heavy hitter category. Do you think Chris' change of address is going to keep him out a top 5 finish ? He is certainly going to be concentrating an awful lot of effort on a single plant. His soil will be great using the raised bed system he always goes with. Here is my prediction; I think more than one grower will break 300 pounds this year.

Great genetics is a great start & if you do everything else right, you may finish way up there Josh.

Mark, just to set the record straight, I think you have helped our sport a great deal. I really appreciate all the help you have been. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I see nothing wrong with heated debate as long as we keep it civil. This forum is sometimes not a good place for those with thin skin. I hope you have a great summer Mark and get a 300 pound melon on that grafted plant. I only hope my biggest melon is at least one tenth of a pound heavier than yours. LOL

Mark, I do believe that any of our members who have the desire and the time to put in is capable of a top five finish with a little good luck. And bad luck is able to stop anyone.

Thanks Mark, Season's end will show whether or not you were prescient, in the meantime while you guys debate ad nauseam things that might or might not happen and discuss little that is helpful to most growers, I'm out working in my patch caring for my plants. Y'all are starting to remind me of a bunch of old women who argue endlessly about who makes the best cake and how it should be made. Keep posting this drivel guys and you just might get girl whipped this year. See ya (hopefully) at the weigh offs in the fall.

Dennis,
this is only my fourth year growing melons, I started with seeds from wal-mart and then just grew my own seeds, produced several 140-169 #. This is the first year I've had seeds with proven genetics, my 233 Caro Kent is my best plant real bushy and thick vines I hope she produces over 200 # for me! and last year was my first try at lopes and grew a 50.5 # and honestly I did nothing but keep the plant alive no special care, so I agree about the genetics. I hope to come down to Allardt this fall I hear that's where the big one are!

It is all about timing Josh. The big ones go to whatever contest is happening at the time they need to be picked. Chris took his world record to the North Carolina weigh-off. I hope to make my first trip there this year. And bear wallow in Kentucky had some very nice melons last year.

Yeah I heard about Yadkin, I thought about that one too. I just want to go to some weigh offs I've never been to. Are us yankee's allowed to come to the southern shows? j/k please don't want to offend anyone! Vic I have a flat bed truck so the bull shit never stops here.

We absolutely love to see a few yanks driving down to our weigh-offs. And some of us drive up that ay once in a while. Bear Wallow is closer to you ans a great place to visit. They have somewhat of a miniature zoo on the farm. They even have a small herd of buffalo. And they do a wagon ride around the farm that is a lot of fun. Allardt always draws a big crowd and they have various forms of entertainment including a parade.

I hope you do Susie!Your right I'm spending more time in the patch less time on here,Ive come up with some great ideas working the soil instead of slinging it.What a waste of time that is.You know I haven't been whipped by a girl, since I ticked my big sister off in 1975.Her & her Tom boy friend tied me up with extension cords & left me for dead.LOL I hope you do well Susie & all the girls as well.

I will try to,If there done growing in time,If the Kins are not successful due to disease pressure.Next year The Kin cave will go Melons also, that would be 6-8 more plants with a few started a little earlier with cables for Hope & other southern weigh-offs.That would be the ultimate year to start in Hope on Labor Day & sweep the south through September. Then smoke the North in Shocktober!LOL!Ok Here I go offending someone.LOL!Who cares! I having Fun!
