So far I have had my plants in for about a month now and with the cool nights we have had they are not growing very fast at all, With the early start we got this year I am way behind now. Stupid weather,, LOL On the upside we have been having some very nice rains this year, last being night before last. Can not remember the last year we had rains this late in the growing season, usually dry and hot by now.

My six plants have been in the ground since March 25. They have grown faster than I expected and are further along than they should be. I took one plant out and put in a smaller 285 Edwards and I trimmed one of my 179's back about 75%. They are ready to set melons soon and ideally I need to wait about 10 days before the first one sets and then space the setting about a week apart. It is the opposite of my situation last year and I am somewhat happy with it. We just had a warm and early spring here and that combined with grow lights and other plant stimulants really brought my plants along fast. And so as I was trying to be early, I got more than I bargained for. I am still hoping for excellent results but next year I may start a week or two later.

I put 2 plants in on May 6th, couple days later, the 267 edwards got eaten. Replaced it with a 2nd 51 wolf.

The bigger 51 is crawling now, will cull to 1 plant soon.

My first year growing these things so not sure if they are growing good or not. Dont expect much but more importantly...just enjoying something new here.

I have a feeling I'm gonna get hooked on these things for future years,

Jeremy, welcome aboard. Will you be doing anything to control weeds this year. That gets a lot of first year growers. Do you have chemicals for insect and disease control ? That is also very important. If you have any questions at all, please let us help you by posting them on this forum. If you have large animals eating your plants you may want to think about a fence if you can afford one. They are a good idea any way you look at it. I am sorry to say I have not been able to build one for myself so far. Still, I know it is a good idea.

My plants have been in for one week today. With the cool nights they are growing slow also. With the sun we are getting now it will not be long before they take off. Thats when the fun starts.
I have got in one 213 Henry 2011 - one 252 Neptune 2010 - one 272 Peden 2011 and two of my 255 Mitchell 2007

Jeremy I think you will get hooked on growing melons this is my 15th year and i will be growing them as long as God lets me. If you need help just ask there is a lot of great guys that will help you.

Well I'm sorry to say the 291 I got from Thomas will have to wait until next season. So you southern boys have another year to put the record out of reach. LOL! Good luck to all!

Most of my seeds did not germ. I have a beautiful 204 Dawson just waiting to go into the soil but the weather has been so cold at night I am waiting for the temps to go up at night. I had a nice 209 Leonard that damped off after getting it's first leaf(bummer). The daytime temps haven't been all that hot either. It has been windy and rainy the last few days and won't get much better for about a week. All my neighbors are planting their gardens and have put out Tomatoes ,Peppers and Eggplant. They only have a few plants and can cover them at night or use wall-o-waters. I'm planting about 70 Tomato plants and at least that many peppers. I am going (as hard as the temptation is to not) to wait. I had frost on June 10 last year and lost half my stuff. I have been so busy (and ill) that I haven't had time to put pictures on my diary. Patience. Slow and steady....

I do have 3 Pumpkins in the ground but they are kind of just sitting there doing nothing. Have to protect them from wind and cold.

I have a 252 Neptune in the ground and doing well. Our weather is cooler than in the South, so I am growing it in a temperature regulated hoop house. My soil is good but I am supplementing with nutrients with compost tea.

Can anyone recommend a fertilizing plan, insect plan and fungus control plan? I have fungicides, insecticides and a ton of worm castings plus well rotted manure, composted maple leaves and some very dark swamp soil.

I have 6 in 2gallon pots in greenhouse, all about 15-18inches around. Waiting on drip tape to show up, should be here today. When it is installed hopefully this week or weekend, and silt fence is put up around area, I will plant them. (1) 291 Kent, (2) 282.5 Dawson, (2) 251... I cant remember what else, they are all labeled.

I put mine in the ground Saturday, 5/18. I was orginally going to grow 3 plants, but got some advice and decided on 2. I have a 291 Kent and 282 Dawson in the ground with both doing well. Both plants have a vine that looks to be the main and about a 12 inch size main bush at the base. Second year growing these, first year grew a 87 pounder.

Ive got a 282 Dawson, 228 Mudd and my wife chose the 239 Kent and all have been in the ground for 2 1/2 weeks and are looking great. This is our 2nd year growing on our own. We only grew 1 last year and it weighed 174. Our goal this year is of course a "world record" but would settle for joining the 200lb club lol!!

Yes Dreamer, I will be using black fabric to fight against weeds.

Chemicals I plan on using are probably Triazicide. Companion for fungicides. I also have daconil & eagle for fungicides....will these work for melons as they do for ags?

What else might you suggest?

Those sound excellent Jeremy. I think you have a good chemical selection. Keep your plants healthy and don't let them get too large and I think you'll have a great year. :o)

1-291 Kent may set a 260 Clementz next to the 291 as its not growing fast or looking great,if it picks up the pace it stays if not will cull it.I wish I had a 291 Kent backup, but I dont lost like 3 plants to damping off while still in the pots this year, and they had like 3 leaves,go figure.I think the 291 Kent will produce a real biggin this year!Dont tell Chris it's a secret!
