I have never had a stump go bad on one of my melon plants before. I can no longer say that. One of my 2 remaining 179's developed problems a couple of days ago. This morning I inspected the vine closely and discovered stump rot. The stump was just dripping with sap. Is this problem treatable if caught in time ? I think my other plants will be susceptible since I developed a problem on one plant. The affected plant has my only melon so far that looks like it may have been a keeper. What treatments would you recommend if any ? I will certainly not be watering close to my stumps anymore this year.

Keep stumps dry, posibly remove leaves right around stump at least 6 inch's from stump this would be 1 foot across to get more air this will help. If you know it is going to rain and have acess to the stump cover it up to keep dry. If you have excess dirt on stump remove down to base of plant leave half inch of dirt to cover roots around base. I am not sure what is the best fungicide for stump rot maybe daconil, or captan. Hope this helps, Jerry

The plant died and I replaced it with a 171.

Pumpkin growers sometime will put a piece of plexiglass over the stump. To keep it dry. (Do a site search on foaming stumps.) I have never had a rotten stump with melons either, In Ag's it is not uncommon. It usually happens around a rain event. I am not sure if it is the same thing that happened to your melon though.

I'm assuming this is one of the grafted plants.I had insect damage to one of my grafted plants stumps last year.Check close.After all, they are pumpkin stumps and must be treated as such.

Yes it was a grafted plant as all of mine are this year. I have covered the stumps with glass and sprayed them good with fungicides. I may cry if I lose any more. lol

Td i have noticed it may be better to remove the glass when there is no chance of rain, and you can cover at night to keep the dew from falling on it. The reason is it will hold moisture under the glass from evaporation or something.

Dennis, if you keep losing stumps, it may be a disease issue. You might want to consider getting your soil tested for pathogens.

Yesterday I applied a fungicide and today about a foot from the plant I find a mushroom the size of my head .... Lol

Dave,the active ingredient in Zerotol is hydrogen peroxide.It is a lot stronger than what you buy at the drugstore. You can purchase 40% hydrogen peroxide at a beauty supply store where it is called developer. I think a gallon is about $12 or $14.
