How do you guys go about fertilizing when you have landscape cloth down ?

I'm tryin' out an idea the terresterial orchid growers of Costa Rica use to deep-feed orchid roots. Several short lenghts of 4" drain pipe are buried at varying depths in the root zone. This method (they say) gets nutrients to where they can do the most good and the depth variation supposedly "lures" the roots deep into a soil layer composed of some sort "special and secret" media placed the year before.
So far, the only downside is my wife's complaint that the garden looks like a Druid ceremonial worship site.
We'll see if the method transfers well to growing melons.

Small doses when watering. I use water soluble ferts through drip irrigation.

I never managed to get my drip irrigation installed so I feed dilute doses through my sprinkling can. There is about always something in the water I use on my plants. I very seldom water them with pure water.

Tha little old melon grower next door (he's speaking to me now) waxes poetic about the application of fertilizers to melons. His put: Too much is worse, far worse, than not enough. His reasoning goes something like this: cucurbits have thousands of years experience dealing with TOO LITTLE nutrients and maybe a hundred years (+-)experience with too much. And timing is everything: the worst possible scenario is sporadic loads of heavy ferts. Light and steady wins the prize. Regards, Clutch

Those sound like words of great wisdom Clutch. I have already stalled out my biggest melon once by giving it too much foliar kelp.

Lite doses are easy to do with drip tape when you are delivering 200 to 300 gallons at a time.
