Is a watermelon that has a snoutish shape a good thing? Also should I pick one that is on the main vine or a secondary?

Ideally you want a long melon with a even shape. But odd shapes may still grow huge. A set on the main vine is always preferable I think. Short melons are seldom competitive.

The best melon is the one that combines both excessive length and excessive girth. It's a simple matter of more area for poundage.

What you need to do is the set the best possible melon that the plant produces in the window that is acceptable for growing a melon by the competition (or running our of good weather).

I only cull a melon when I have another on that same plant that is better than it.

Set them on a finger vine(off stump)or the mv I wouldn't do a secondary.the 291 was grown on a finger vine.

If I understand correctly the melon I have is on a finger vine. Is that kind of like the back main on pumpkins? I have one on the main but it looks very misshaped, I will cull it most likely.
