Noticed a plant (185 Bright 11 x open) in the "eater" row of Cc's with an unusally thick stump. Site preparation on that hill fell far short of that rendered to the competitive sites and yet the melon's growth rate (especially in length)matched or exceeded any other melon.

Question: Is stump diameter a good predictor of finished size and is anyone tracking/pollinating for stump size?
Thanks in advance, Clutch

With my grafted plants this year, large stump size seemed to be an indication of disease problems. The big ones ended up hollow with the insides completely rotted out.

Both my melons with the largest stumps seem to have a disease. (one is a graft one is not) With vines collapsing on large sections or in one case the entire plant went down. I know that in pumpkins when the stump starts to swell it usually means bad things to come. I am not sure with melons, but based on what I have seen this year, large stumps may not necessarily indicate good things
