I agree with Handy. And I don't think grafting had all that much to do with the size of the melons these seeds grew. Anyway, I have big hopes for the Bartoli seeds in 2013.

A lot of growers must think these Bartoli seeds are good seeds as they seem to be selling for as much as $30 per seed. I will plant them and I kind of hate to take the chance of losing one of these plants to a failed graft so I may go non grafted.

Mark, will you be grafting yours ?

I have 3- 245s and may buy a few more.I don't like all my eggs in one basket,so I will grow both if my grafting is a success.

I'm going with the 255 Mitchell Since I can only pick one. I will also put the 272 Edwards in the patch this year and see how nice of a cross those two can give me. Trying to keep with all Michigan Melons.

255 is a great seed grew my best ever.Isn't the 272 from the 267 edwards(255).I might cross the 255 female with the 272 edwards as the male. That could be good. IMHHO I dont think using the 255 as the male on the 272 edwards will be a good cross.Wont that be 3 times back into itself. The family tree will go straight up.lol how about a 270.5 Neptune X 272 Edwards????

I have a couple 270.5s you can have.send a bubble with a note.Or I will have the 270.5 Neptune in my patch you can stop by & get some pollen & I will buy you lunch!

Look at 255 Mitchell, 267 Edwards, 285 Edwards, 282 Dawson, 199.5 Mudd and 165b Cantrell. Pick one of those and you cannot go wrong. All proven to do great, except 282. I grew it and it has awesome potential, just did not do it justice as a new grower.

afveteran: Some other good genetic cross's with the 255 would be 207 Cantrell, 239.7 Finders, 209 Holloway and 266.5 Neptune.
There will be some if not all in the GWG auction in Jan

Linden, Mi.,

255 - Mitchell
267 - Edwards

I will be planting the 181 - Berry, it has the 255 - Mitchell in to the 291 Kent (WR 2010)

I think the 291 & 274 Kent are getting neglected here,I got a feeling Chris will be proving these seeds this year!Look what they did in the top ten in 2012.

I have the 207 Cantrell and the 239.7 Finders. This may be what I go with. I just can't wait till March/April. I need a greenhouse so I can do this year around. lol

I'll be going with the 168 whiticare which I believe was a 291x274 cross, and I'll also be going with the 228 masterson which I think has some Kent genetics not sure which though. These guys were gracious enough to help out at newbie. I'm pretty excited about my first year.

Fred Whitacre is one of the nicest guys you will run into. I am glad you are growing his seed. The 228 Masterson is off the 113 Kent and was open pollinated.

I have not seen Fred on the site in a while. Anyone know how he is doing?

Mark's right about the 274 Kent. The North Carolina boys can tell you. HC Williams picked a very young melon to win the big farmers market weighoff in August that had ridiculous potential if it had stayed on the vine. I crossed the 274 with my new fav seed the 282 Dawson.

For next year the 199 Mudd is a shoe in for me, also the 165 B

Yep I think thats Chris's Favorite the 274,I like the 291 thats why it's my male pollinator on the 209 this year.It was a wide long melon (Husky).Watch for smoking melons in 2013!

I fear some of the not so good natured ribbing that Fred sometimes gets on here may have gotten to him. I do hope we hear from him soon.
