While checking the bottom of my sons melon today I rolled it on its side and heard several cracks in the middle of the melon. Will that stop the growth? Or is it all over for this one? It is about 130 lbs and have been gaing slow and steady all summer. This is a 4-H one and needs to hang In there for a while longer. Still about a month till the fair.

should be fine. they will do that if you try to move them sideways at that size. As long as its growing & the bottom is ok, should make it a month. How old ?

I asked that same question 2 years ago. No problem, mine kept growing.

It's about 50 DAP give or take a few since it was open pollinated. I hope it keeps going. He's already lost a good one this year. Thanks for the insight.

Wow I have never rolled a melon on its side before while growing.I would be careful you could damage it.

The cracking sounds is a good indication the melon is ripe.
