Hi all! I was wondering if it is better to direct sow a giant watermelon seed in the ground or start it inside and then transplant when the plant and roots are more established? I direct sowed ours last year(1st year) and I think that contributed to our slow start in growth. Any help would be appreciated.

Most growers start their seed indoors, It is much easier to give them the perfect temperature for germinating that way. Which is especially important if you only have a few seeds too germinate.

I feel it is safer and better to start them inside. I keep them in 6", 9", and 12" pots. Michigan can have cool weather in the spring.

Seeds started inside will germinate faster because of soil temperature and a watermelon can grow three to four foot long by placing the potted watermelon in a wheelbarrow and rolling it out when the sun and temps co-operate! This gives you a month long head-start on growing a big one. If the soil in the garden is not warm enough the plant will not grow!
