Not pollination but an actual POLL

Who thinks secondary roots from pinning vines down matter?

TYPE:

"Roots"- for it matters alot

"Leafy greens" for leafy greens and could care less if you even see a secondary root

This is opinion based and im looking hard at experienced growers answers that have grown longer than Ive been alive. If over 60 I'm counting you as 2 votes

Roots...if I have a fruit on that particular vine.

Leafy greens....no fruit on that particular vine.

I have been growing melons since 1999 and started pinning down vines in I think in 2002 or 2003. Have been doing to date. But now I only do the first 8' to 10' from the stump on my vines. That also help's with the wind and I feel it makes a stronger plant.

I think the total amount of roots, secondary from pinning down or otherwise and what these roots are able to extract from their growing medium is a major determinant of fruit size. But many other factors are involved.

i have grown a 253 with NO vine roots at all, so they are not a have to have thing. BUT all my big ones do root ;)

where DO they root specifically kent?
EVERY single vine on plant? (thatd be messy)
just key vines?

Watermelon plants are much more difficult to root then pumpkin plants. It has been my experience that they choose where they want to put down roots although I am able to increase the chance a vine will root at a particular leaf node by burying it. I would have my melon plants root at every leaf node if I could figure out how to make that happen. I believe the most roots in relation to vine size plus the healthiest best fed and exceptionally well drained roots equals the largest melons.

they root at the leaf nodes just like the pumpkins but much slower. They need moisture and time to send out the root without it drying up before it gets to the ground. BUT TOO much moisture for too long will rot the vines, hence the reason you can't bury vines down here. Pinning them down will do it unless its very hot & dry.
