I read somewhere years ago that a melon had a tap root. Do you guys start your plants In large pots as to not break the taproot.

Not a tap root like some trees. The roots branch off so much and fast in a short period of time I doubt someone could say for sure which one was the "tap" root. I start mine in Solo cups with holes then transplant to a larger pot if needed to get me through till outside planting. Mine are currently in size 300 nursery pots, 2 true leaves, awaiting a dryer patch. If more time is needed I will transplant again to a 1000. No idea what the grafters do.
