Deal With It

The grass situation in the melon patch will reach critical mass by the end of July.

I've been researching Poast and similar products, but if I want to go with a cheaper product for something that kills only grass, what would you recommend?

If someone has a quantity of Poast which with you are willing to separate, just let me know, as I don't want to pay for the full 2.5-gallon jug, and I'd like to help out a fellow grower if they have product which they can't use this season.

This product has me curious, as we are always fighting weeds. Has anyone out there used this POAST product? If so can you tell us how you applied it & how it affected the plant?

I killed 2 melon plants with it last year, don't over the top spray it when its going to be over 90 next few days. think overdose neem effect but muchhhhhhh worse in heat. just scorched plant to the ground over few days.

Proceed with caution.

It is foliar sprayed onto the grass/grains

I don't even use it at all any more due to this. not really worth the risk to me

I have used similar products. Active ingredient is clethodim. Takes a while to work but is very effective. If you apply too high of a rate it will slow fruit growth due to the plant needing to metabolize it. It will also cause damage if applied when the temps are hot.

Both of those issues are from experience. I would still use it, just be sure of your rate and weather conditions.

You can buy it in amounts as small as one pint as Hi-Yield Grass Killer at Atwoods in OK. Just don't use Hi-Yield Weed Killer. Read the label to be sure it is the same chemical as in Poast. It is good for sandburs, crabgrass and bermuda grass for sure at a rate of one ounce per gal. I have used it on pine seedlings and Jubilee watermelons. I am not sure though about using it on competition watermelons and pumpkins.

I used poast about 5 days ago. Applied with a backpack pump sprayer at VERY low pressure. Tried to target only grass. I did not soak the grass. I should have done it at least a week earlier but procrastinated. Ares were in rescue mode. Definitely worked. Used 2.5% rate with crop oil as a sticker. Used it before and will again.

Also, I agree with others and the label. Don't use it over top of the plant when the plants are stressed or on a bright sunny day.

Thanks Guys. I'll have to see if I can get it or a product like it in Canada. Will have to experiment on our other giants veggie (rutabagas, cabbages,etc) before I trust it on our pumpkins & watermelons.
