Here is my fast growing melon on 2 grafted plants, 7 dap 38" circ with a split on the side. Any chance of it healing? I've packed it with sulfer this evening when I found it split. Theres another pic with sulfer packed in the split. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=278934

I have had rabbit damage heal over, and I have had it rot the melon. Maybe if it doesn't get too deep it might be OK. But that melon is growing crazy fast. I would worry about it splitting even more.

Mark, that's what I'm worried about. It may run like a windshield crack, I just don't have experience with them. I now have 4 other fast growing melons on those 2 plants so I do have back ups...If they don't do the same. Thanks!

grow on an area you have composted on for the last 6-7 years, till in some hydrated lime, 0-0-50 and make sure your soil tests come back requiring some 180 yr old nuclear physicist to be dug up just so you can read the numbers...Oh yeah..grab yer ankles after melon is pollinated oh and huh a lump of coal.

How much 0-0-50 have you got in there ?
How recent have you spread it ?
What are you feeding it ?
Too much potassium at one time will split it.

I have two that are coming along pretty good I think as long as I can keep the vines healthy. Rain has been kinda spotty in these hills.

ESheel31 In April I put down 12 pounds of sop 0-0-50 950/ square feet. Watered it heavily so it wasn't setting there like a time bomb. Well aware of too much potassium, I've blown up a lot of kins in the early days,lol. Compost tea brew and watering 150/gal twice daily, making sure the soil isn't too wet at the nodes and with covered stumps.

Thanks, I'll be happy if it gets to 146.6 & gives me a PB! I did inoculate most all the root system and at the nodes on both plants with prepared & processed 6-Benzylaminopurine at a 10% rate. Don't know if its having an affect or not. I'll do 10 day updates and if it goes down.

Right sparcmat! John here's the lazy mans way of explaining. I copied it from Wikipedia. 6-Benzylaminopurine, benzyl adenine or BAP is a first-generation synthetic cytokinin that elicits plant growth and development responses, setting blossoms and stimulating fruit richness by stimulating cell division. It is an inhibitor of respiratory kinase in plants, and increases post-harvest life of green vegetables. Influence of cytokinin as 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) in combination with other methods on postharvest green color retention on broccoli heads and asparagus spears, showed positive results for quality retention. Treatment with 10 and 15 ppm BAP can be used to extend shelf life of fresh-cut broccoli florets and shredded cabbage during storage at 6±1°C at commercial level. Back to me, It has also been reported that some cell divisions in fruit tissue enlarges lobes of fruit to an undetermined size because of many other factors, soil, moisture, nutrients etc. Also extends green photo tint cell related tissues of plant life is more what I'm shooting for
