When measuring a long gourd do you measure the stem also? I wouldnt think that you would but want to be sure.
Thanks, Brooks

Plus it is measured kind of weird. It is laid flat on the ground and measured from one end to the other. If you have a curve. It really takes away from your length.

What is a typical "competitive" length at the contests?
I have no idea for what to shoot for.
70", 80", 90", 100"?
Never grown one of these things before.

Jumpin' in on your post Brooks, since there aren't too many LG questions. Got 4 plants growing from Ron Wallis' 114" Some fruit are corckscrew shaped, some are caveman clubs and some are what might be considered normal. What gives? Is my soil messed up or is this just what happens? Had I ever thought to girdle the "clubs" to squeeze out some length I'd be sitting pretty right about now...LOL Any input appreciated greatly, Duff

i would say typical is more in the 70"- 80" range....anything over 90" you have a chance to place high at your local contest. dont think everyone grows 90" gourds, i've been growing for a few years and my best is 83" i think i have a shot to get to 90" for my first time this year!

I got a chance to place I think if Barnesville Ohio Festival has this as a entry.I was wondering if you can use a calcium spray on it like you do pumpkins, same thing right? I been doing it and it dont seem to be hurting any. Also, whats the growing time for a long gourd 90 days?
Thanks, Brooks

growing time is about 40 days from pollination. Then they mature. They are very fragile so tape the securely to a 2x4 or something else in transport.

I heard growing time was about 34 days. If I kept better records I would know for sure...LOL ! Good luck Petey getting a PB. 2'nd year grower here, and currently 1 foot better than last year at 6ft. Couple more coming on, but nites are getting cooler and lots more to learn! Maybe I should start a lobby for heaviest LG, then I might contend this season...LOL Duff
