The GPC should have a category for long gourds. Several of the sites measure them. Bob Attaway entered the longest gourd measured in Pennsylvania. I think it was around 113 inches but am uncertain.

Bob Attaway's long gourd whooped me so I know the measurement was 106". My two were 98" and 93" from Dan Carlson's genetic base and last grown by Glen Andrews.
Bob Attaway had a growing secret.
I know his secret! He fed the sucker red eye gravey and grits and had a blond Southern gal do seductive dances under it twice a week.

This thread has been most interesting, to me. I knew my 98" and 93" were top quality lengths. Now the picture is showing nicely.

there are several subjects we will discuss to include a review of the 2005 season, expansion of our site locations, increased involvement with bp.c,national sponsorships, etc
as you know we already have in addition to atlantic giants a squash, watermelon, tomato and cantalope catagory
why not a long gourd catagory as well? stay tuned dick

OK I just seen a picture of Al Eaton's 122" World Record Long Gourd from 2005... Hmm The S.S.L.G.G's is going to have to get some representation going in with the GPC...Then again maybe thats why they are called the Secret Society???

Moondog, I think the secret is in the technique...LOL I got some seeds from mr Ron Wallis (114") and still only managed a 6 footer. Shared some of his seeds with a couple friends who both bettered me...both newbies!!! Good luck

Al's long gourd will not be recognized as a world record. It was measured at a Long Gourd competition in Toronto, but it had a small split or something on it, so Al decided not to register it for any records. He said he had lots of time to grow another one. He is shifting his focus from giant pumpkins to Long Gourds. I heard it also broke on him on the way home from the competition. The current record still stands. I did hear that the Lyons might have one that will better the current world record though. It will be going to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto to be measured. Good luck to the father & son team at the RWF.

Why would a split make it uneligible? Its a length contest...not weight.?

Geese..........I'm really concernd about the quality slippage, in some, of our thinking. It one thing, to admire and acknowledge rotten and split items. Unhealthy ugly stuff has no place at the winner's level. Part, of the skill involved, is finishing and showing a healthy item. Part, of the observers thrill, is seeing a real winner just full, of pride and joy.
Now we know that 122" has been grown. Hat's off, to Al, for not trying, to register, less than a prime healthy gourd.

I agree with G its a length thing. Long gourds often split and crack when they mature. A sound pumpkin is so not so honest people can not add water or some other liquid to increase weight.

For the sake of clarification the lg I entered at Altoona was measured at 107.5 inches.
I think the reason a lot of older growers like myself are turning to lg's is that you can work on the plants standing up. My knees are about worn out.
Thanks: Bob Attaway

Last winter I came across the secret gourd group you speak of. I was leary to enter the web site because of the secret nature.
Is it a legit group?
Any info would be appreciated.

I have made overtures to the Society and currently awaiting follow-up contact...LOL. If a grower of G's status is overlooked, I have little hope...Will keep you informed, if it's not contrary to the Society dogma! Best wishes, Duff
