We've only grown LGs twice but Clarence Koch tutored me well.
Use a nail clipper, side-cutter, dikes, scissors, wire cutter, whatever to nibble a bit of the pointed end. See how hard the cover is? It's hard like wood. Nibble gently to expose the radicle without damaging it. Some folks also try to weaken the sides by sanding or filing but I've not found this to be necessary.
For us if the radicle starts growing the seed has always split & grown normally with just a couple exceptions where somehelp was needed to remove the coat.
Once the tip is exposed we treat the seed the same as a Pumpkin - Barely moist paper towel inside a zip-loc bag at 85-90°F until she pops.

I've filed em, cut em, and just thrown em in the soil. They all worked for me, but I'd suggest doing some sort of abrasion cuz those seeds can be buggers to get off if they remain stuck on a cotyledon.
