I am thinking about growing some long gourds next year. Is there any fall prep I wouldn't do with pumpkins. Also how much room do these guys need from other plants.

Peep, I grow my LG's on the periphery of the AG patch, so they benefit from all the patch ammendments. I think the jury is still out on what benefits LG growth the best? If you try something and it works...be sure and let us know...lOL! Their roots have been detailed in Mr Urena's patch at something like 30+feet! Not sure of any direct correlation here, my best performing LG's this season had little root competition, the other half the trellised plants were competing with sqash and zucchini plants? Just some observations. I'm sure others will weigh in once the competition season winds up.

Peep--I would say use the same fall soil prep as with AGs.My fall LG prep is a lot of organic matter, partly broken down up to 2 years, tilled in,then winter rye sown.
Re space,my favourite tale is--in 2004 I gave a friend,Ron Wallace,2 LG seedlings and encouraged him to try growing them.He dug a 4' x 8' patch in his lawn, added some good garden soil and grew the 2 plants. One of them grew the "114 Wallace 04",which beat the existing world record.
Exceptions don't prove the rule, but the point is,LGs are very adaptable and tolerant of conditions.Bet to try them a year, see what happens and learn from there.
