When I began growing years ago I had heard of blackberry
winter but paid it no attention.

As the years went by I began to realize it was true.
Here in GA we will get lots of warm weather during March
and April, but when the blackberries begin to bloom we
always get cold weather.

April 26, 2010 it is 60f for a high and around 40f tonight and for the next few nights. The blackberries are blooming.

I will plant my LG's on or around May 1.

I assume other parts of the world have a similar situation?

I'm wondering if dampening off disease will hit more growers than usual this year?

Kinda the opposite here Bob. I'll have a plant in the ground by this week-end for sure. A month ahead of everything, hope the mild weather continues. The almanac calls for a hot and dry summer here.
PS- two of the three 107.5 Attaway plants are hardening off now, outside it is 13 degrees at 10:30pm, unheard of in April.

Yesterday, tilled in all my compost for the LG sites and got up this morning to see the garden completely white and snow still falling.Could be a cold wave heading for Nova Scotia.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are supposed to be cool and rainy but the overnight temps aren't supposed to go below 3 degrees. 15 and 18 degrees forecasted for Saturday and Sunday.I don't like that S word Al, lol.
