I know most pumpkin growers use 85 degrees. Watermelons like 90-95 alot better. I have had good luck starting giant pear gourds with the melons at 90. Just wondering what temp you guys like for long gourds?

This year the temperature was an average 32 degrees ( around 89-90 F ) and I'm very pleased with the results.

I don't want to sound like a broken record but most of the LG seeds planted germinated, including 6 out of 6 95 Seca 2000. I did have some failures, notably my own 85.5, none of them came up. 4 of 5 107.5 Attaway's popped and 2 of the 3 117.38 Attaway seeds came up. The higher temperature and prior seed prep is probably the reason. I also think some seeds just germinate better than others.

Wayne, after this year with my own seeds and last year with the 124 Eaton seeds, I'm convinced that some seeds just germinate better then others. probably a genetic trait but I'll leave that for the grown ups. For the 95 Seca seeds, the 1st five were soaked in warm water in a 20% peroxide solution. After @ 12 hrs, they were rinced off and soaked for another 12 hrs in clean water with a small amount of seaweed, then placed in pots in a cooler at 89-90 degrees. A 6th was started two days later using the paper towel method. I used fingernail clippers to clip the outside edges to allow moisture to get in. After 2-3 days this one was also placed in dirt along with the others. At day 4 or 5 they all got a little water to stay moist. First one came up after 7 days and the rest after 10 days.

i did a file and no soak, put in peat pots with moist soil, covered with saran wrap to retain what little moisture there was. Put in 89 degree germ chamber. first one up in 3 1/2 days. all 4 were up by 5th day.
