I honestly don't know the answer. Like many, I treated long gourds like AG's. For one spot this year, I threw together a mix of manure, peat moss, some top soil and some supersoil which essentially is peat moss on steroids. Ph is in the mid 5's. The LG's in that spot are on fire and have eclipsed a plant that has been in the ground since May 1st. Again, I don't know the answer but at years end I may have a different view on soil requirements for long gourds.

Hi Andy:
Like you I have taken my knowledge of soils from pumpkins and applied it to LG's.
Maybe Alan E. will weigh in, his knowledge of soils is top notch.

Interesting subject Andy! PH might be a factor? Wondering if could just be warmer weather/soil though too?

I don't know the answer Duff. I have one that went in May 1st, enclosed in plastic, wind barrier yadda yadda. It's doing fine, starting to vine nicely. I planted two last week in a new spot high in OM and low ph and they are thriving to the point that they are now ahead of the earlier plant. The tilth in the new spot is exceptional, very loamy, maybe that helps. We will see in the long run.

The 134.25 was grown on a gravel/loam with 5year old manure, and a ph of 7.2. The same site also grew the 121.75 the year before. We will see what happens this year in the same site.

From 4 different soil tests,4 years and 4 locations I have the following averages---best LG-121" pH-6.8 OM=10%
I can't say if that is ideal but those are the figures I have for my best LGs in those years.
Re the other nutrients,I pretty well have maintained the levels I have in that same soil for AGs but I have a feeling that LGs don't need high levels to grow good ones.I don't think they are "heavy feeders" and my nutrient levels may be too high.
