How do LGs grow in the desert?

Here is a lesson that I learned the hard way. When you get a good one growing tie it to the trellis with something spft, stretchy and strong, kike a nylon stocking. I Lost my personal best when the stem snapped and it broke in 3 pieces.
At least you don't have the fungus problems caused by excess rain and humidity that has plagued Iowa for the past 3 years. The bottom of my vines are devoid of leaves right now.

First year with LG but they are way different from AGs -- easier too, at least here is the desert. My understanding is LG originated in the tropics so may be well suited for this heat (low humidity is another issue?). Only problem LG have here is me LOL. But they are ever so brittle and snap easier then AGs, not sure if that is just local conditions? We night pollinating moths -- I didn't protect for controlledd polination so now have a good batch of "open" small ones (will thin when the times comes). I don't have PM yet but we do get it here. I think PM is natural with AGs, but as I've grown elsewhere and know PM here is nothing like up north!!! We're in the path but don't usually have downey mildew either = too dry. I don't use shade cloth nor misters on the LG and they don't seem to flag at all. I would love to use shade cloth for the hail if I could figure out how to do it -- its a bit high to cover! Leaves are good ground up but lower leaves do show some age. I thinking LGs are desert loving plants, so much so that I might have to give up on AGs (actually, I love them way too much to stop else I wouldn't be crazy enough to try them here!!!) But season is still young and have to see how it goes.

Iowegian -- thanks ever so very much for the tip! I was wondering how I was going to safely tie them down! But it does beg a question: How do you smooth it over with the wife when you use all her nylons?
