I am interested in opinions on the best method to harvest and store a long gourd for a contest. Any insight would be great. Thank You!

In my opinion the longer they hang and stay hooked up to the vine the better the seeds are. For that reason Art and I leave ours hanging until the compititions. Then we duck tape them to a 1" X 3" piece of wood for stability before we cut them and lower them down.

Cloth strips tied where gourd touches board, padding to support where it doesn't, before removing from vine. Use a very good board!!! Spray/wipe with bleach every few days. Store in well ventilated, cool and dry area protected from bugs, rodents and rugrats! Good luck, John

In my experience leaving them on the vine too long after growth has stopped has resulted in gords splitting lengthwise...could just be my area or genes? Just a thought.
