I'd say start them inside around May 1-15, depending on when you want to show them. They certainly don't want any frost.

As far as the UK, I don't know what your climate is like in your area so I can't help you with a plant date. You could plant them the same time you plant the rest of your veggies, they are not like AGs which need a really long growing season. The gourd itself will only grow for about 40 days where ags will go for 90plus days, so there is no major rush to get the LG plant in the ground early.
