For those who are planting the 135 Jacobus I want to let you know that they seem to germinate very well! I got 4 out of 4. Three of them were pushing soil in 3 days, the fourth one was at day 5.

I soaked for 1 hour (a few drops of hydrogen peroxide and seaweed, no filing or clipping) then put in soil that was prewarmed and kept at 88 degrees.

Caleb said that he gave most requests more than one seed because long gourds have a hard to germinate reputation. With the success I had with the seed one might consider saving any seed you won't be growing out this season.

Good luck, John

That's good news John. I was planning a one at a time approach just in case they were difficult to germinate. Still going with a double soak though, 12 in HO3 followed by 12 in kelp.
Went 5 for 5 last year with a 2000 seed.

My 135 popped in three days! 6 hour water soak, placed in 2 inch peat pellet. As Andy and John are suggesting, a one at a time approach is good advice. Thanks Caleb.

Had other gourds pop in 3 days but the 135s took longer. Don't give up on the 135s, keep them warm and slightly moist.

I'm up to nine plants and the 135 was easily the fastest to pop. Having said that, I don't think ease of germination equals success, it's just the first hurdle. I started 10 seeds for club members about two weeks ago, same seed and so far 6 have germinated all at different times. Go figure.

Ours are up in three days. And ready to take a run at getting the New Wisconsin State Record into the Martins patch.
The bar has been set very high to get a new state record.
