I own a vacant building lot beside my house.Part of my gardens are there.Built a long gourd trellis 20 feet from the street in the front part of this lot,(24'x10'x14'tall)and it looked really nice.Today the city came and made me take it down.Apparently I was walking some kind of fine line with the zoning laws.Don't really understand why, being a temporary structure, but they said it was in front of the house. So, very very very disappointed today and No More Long Gourds for this year.

What a bummer! I wonder if there is some sort of loophole if it is like a trellis garden structure.

Someone had called and complained. The head guy for the city thought it was terrible himself but he has to follow the rules. He looked for a loophole, but there was none.Trellis dismantled last night, for there is a $1000 fine if I do not.

Grow them up a flag pole covered in mesh. You must be allowed to have a flag pole.

At least the city tried to find a loophole for you.

While living in Illinois I had a wild purple thistle come up as a volunteer in a pumpkin garden in my front yard . I figured it was not doing any real harm and the flowers were pretty, and I fully intended to take it out before it went to seed . Before I got a chance, the police showed up with a thistle removal order; seems a neighbor had complained that I was growing noxious weeds in my yard , which violated some city ordinance. The police were friendly and apologetic, stating that the neighbor had made constant complaints about me having a vegetable garden in my front yard( which wasn't illegal) but had finally found a legitimate if nitpicky complaint. We assure them that the plant would be gone by the next morning. that night we started construction of an exact paper mache duplicate, using cotton balls dyed purple for the flowers, and by dawn the next day we had the original removed, and the new synthetic plant in place. We did inform the local police of our intent; they heartily approve, assure us that there was no law against synthetic noxious plants, and gratefull accepted our donation of several large big max pumpkins for their community halloween party they sponsor for local kids. Long into the winter, despite much snow and ice, the thistle thrived in all its fake green and purple glory.
