We've only grown LG for 3 years and for us, the fruit are always on secondaries.
This year I paid more attention, did more grooming and vine placing, but still no gourds on the main vine.
Also, what is the standard length of time (number of days) that I can expect the gourd to grow.
Thanks/Glenn

Sidevines for me also. It's my first year getting one to the top of the trellis but from what I understand 45 days is max.

Gourds will only grow on the secondaries, that's normal for long gourds. @ 80 % of the growth will occur within the first 20 days and growth should max out at @ day 40.

Mark, you can grow several on one plant if you want, but you probably want to limit gourds to one or two to maximize length. The link below is from plants that were allowed to get jiggy with it. Lots of healthy fruit but no really long ones.

Thanks guys, also...do you terminate the main and secondaries at some point?
Ive got baby gourds growing and will cull down to 2 or 3 but is there a time to terminate side growth as well just like the pumpkins?

North Shore, trim any time, the more you trim the more they grow. I have had gourds on main vine but the side vines are where you will see the gourds. I have grown 5 gourds on one vine, the longest being 114.5, the shortest being 98 the rest all over 100" I see most growth, day 11 - 14 and 40 days to grow but I have grown them longer.
