Well, my posting below this one got no replies so I guess there are about as many growers in the rest of the West Coast as I figured.
So as a follow up question;
Where did the long gourd originate from and where is the optimum growing region?
Thanks/Glenn

Here is a link that attempts to answer that question Glenn.

Thanks Andy, interestingly enough...the gourd that I uncurled from the top of my trellis was as described by someone in that thread...it was all curled up almost in a circle and then it straightened out once I hung it off the trellis.

The "Collins" Long GOURD was developed by Ray Waterman, who set the world record in 1991 of 99 inches. It was a cross between "dipper" (of the Ritz Bros of Canton, Ohio), an "Italian Edible", and the "baseball" gourds, also of the Ritz origin. I sent thousands of these seeds to my customers, both as orders and as gifts for decades. There were the three crosses and several selections over a few years to develop the variety. It is now marketed by myself (P & P Seed Co - www.bigseeds.com) & Harris Seeds of Rochester New York and traded by many growers. If other crosses have been made, that would have been beyond my control, but, the variety originated in Hamburg New York in my backyard! Ray Waterman

Ya, not real helpfull are they Chris!!
So Ray, did your cross include the African Snake Gourd at all or is that just not the case?
Linus, was that just a guess or do you have data to back up your one liner answer?

First, let me correct the date mentioned - 1990 for the 99 incher. No African Snake gourds involved in my crosses. The three crosses above were used only. I sold to Harris Seeds just like I sold them "Dills Atlantic Giant" for Howard back in the mid 1980's. I did take a couple of specimes with me. Its pretty much a no-brainer. Ray
