hi,

I am trying out lg's this year and I decided that It would be nice to grow them on these structures that we have in our back yard. They are perfect because they are just like a lg trellis, but extremely sturdy. It is made of 2 x 4's on the top I believe along with very strong wooden planks intertwined with the 2 by 4's to give the structure strength, and all of this is held up by solid 1 foot thick plaster colums. The first structure (there are two) is 103 inches tall and roughly 10' by 10'. I plan to put 1 lg on this. The other structure is 120 inches tall and about 12 feet by 30 feet, and I plan on putting 2 or maybe 3 plants on this. Now that I've gotten into the details of the trellis, the only puoblem is that the structeres are surrounded by concrete, so the only way to grow them would be in a contained growing space (a pot). So, Initially I planned on growing in a 55 gallon drum (which I can get for free) but I also found a 500 gallon pot called a smart pot that seems like it might do the job without getting the lg's rootbound, but they cost $56 each at their cheapest price, and I'm growing 3-4 plants. What do you guys think? Are there any cheaper alturnitaves? I have a really big bagster bag that I could fill with soil, which cost $33 each that might work, but I think that they are water tight. thanks!

I just looked at the bagster bag. It appears to hold 606 gallons and is not water proof,,, so can I use this?

I don't know anything about bagster bags, but if I were in your position I would use the biggest pot I could afford. I have heard of gourds grown successfully in containers, but you really have to make sure you keep them well watered. They have a lot of leaf surface to transpire water. They do respond well to foliar feeding, which helps with container growing.
