I notice that some long gourds are a solid pale green color like Bubba's, while ours are dark green with white spots. Is the color difference genetic or a product of covering vs not covering the gourds?

I think it is genetic. The seed I sent you came from a light green gourd grown from a 115.13 Wright, but I also grew some seeds that produced dark green. They all grew under the trellis in the shade. It was open pollinated so it might have gotten some of the dark green genetics mixed in. We grew another 115.13 this year and it was light green as well. I think that more important than color is shape. The ones that get the huge fat blossom end don't get as long. I had one grow on the outside of the trellis this year that stayed light green. I don't think the sunlight affects color.

The reason I thought it might be sunlight related is that I had covered a 4 inch area of the Cheyenne's gourds with foam shelf liner to pad them from the rope I used to help support them. Where the foam covered the gourd it stayed light green, almost looked like a tan line.
