Do you LG growers set the fruit on the main vine, or will you take anything? I have a roughly 14 foot main on my 127 Urena that has not produced any females yet, but I have plenty of them on the secondary vines. Also, do you tend to set two fruit per plant, or should you stick to one? Thanks.

My plants get so many side vines it is hard to tell if it is on the main or a side vine. We are growing 4 plants on a 24' wide trellis and the plants are now intermingling and hanging off the ends. Some of the side vines are going on the ground and rooting in, which can't hurt.
Last year I had 2 going on my best plant and couldn't decide which one to keep. First one would be longer, then the next day the other would be longer, and back and forth. I let them both grow and got a 120 and a 129. My son let 3 go at the same time on his plant and got 111, 119, and 123. I think this year we will limit them to just 2 at a time. But they often set a second crop of gourds and sometimes the second crop is better than the first.

They tend not to have females on the main. Set some on strong secondaries that are high enough. My pb was grown on the main but its the only one that I got set on the main in about 10 seasons.

Most of your gourds will be found on the secondary vine ....look for them at the first leaf joint past the main!

The first leaf joint is where I've got some too. I've been looking for females on the main myself the past few days and wondering about this. Thanks for the info.
None on the main on any of my 5 plants yet.

I've only seen a few main vine gourds thru the years......don't be surprised if you don't see any. In fact I really don't think it matters where you find those baby gourds. they really don't work like a pumpkin. I usually get two crops of gourds off of a plant. the first gourd or two I let get about 30-35 days old and then start a second crop ....lord only know witch vine that second set of gourds might be grown on. There is just to many vines by that time.....your just looking for an open female to pollenate. The second crop of gourds are going to be the longer than the first crop. I'm guessing this has to do with an older larger plant. So don't sweat where your gourd is on the plant!
