We don't get many gourds round here. Most gourds I've seen are fixed to a 2x6 or some other flat board. As most people's pickup truck cannot allow this to set flat on the bed from front to back (assuming it is a legitimately long gourd) even with the gate down, what do you do? The board will of course flex during the drive if it hangs off the gate. This must be a common consideration? Maybe run a steel pole along the length of it? What is normal?

I have always duck taped it to a 2x4 and just have it rested on closed tail gate. I strap just the 2x4 to the bed and it has worked fine even on a 4 hour trip.

Last year I made a rack for my Ford Ranger. Photo of it is in my 2014 diary. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=229230 I had to use 2x2's to fit the stake holes in the box. I may some day make one for my Ram with 2x3's. I would make some angled braces to stiffen it up some. We only had to go 3.5 miles, but they rode just fine, taped to 2x4's, then tied and taped to the rack.
