GatewaytoH...

Last year someone gave me some long gourd seeds and I would like some information about growing them. I am going to grow them this year.
1. Do they cross with pumpkins or squash so that I need to pollinate myself?
2. Do they take the same soil as the pumpkins and squash and the same fertilizer, pesticide, and fungicide care?
3. Do they require a lot of water or just regular garden watering?
Any information you can give me or if you can give me a website to check out I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
W

I failed big time just trying to get germination and emergence last spring. Then one finally made the show. I set it out and a cotton picken animal made it a Spring Salad.

Several adventuring souls are going to try and see to it that even I can have them this year. Trying again!

I am going to try to grow them. I am going to grow them up something and let them hang like luffah sponge.
I wish you the best of luck Doc. Maybe this will be the year for everything.

'sfar as i know, they are pollinated at night by bugs that come out then. i am not sure about cross-pollination, but i'm gonna guess they won't cross with AGs.

i would say the same soil and evironment as pumpkins, except all of the growth is on a trellis, like 10 feet high across the top--a good example of the plant's growth habit anyway is in svrichb's diary from '02...it went up a ladder
and tried to overtake the available airspace!
and that's a good thing.
my final guess is that they require average garden watering,
but as soon as fruits are apparent, greater attention should be paid to the advice of someone who really knows
about this---i grew several of these plants but never got a trellis up for them---but they did grow right up a nearby
semi-bushy type of tree and tried overtaking it....
i'll try again this year....good luck with it! 'pal2

I wrote an article a few years back about these gourds. "Long Gourds 101" can be seen by putting "long gourds" into the search box at the top of this page!
