Tremor

We were given some seeds late this past spring & I started 3 of them. Soon my entire trellis & garage were awash in a tangle of leaves & vines. But no fruit.

I hadn't expected much having started so late.

Questions I still cannot find answers to are:

What is the Latin name?
What is their native origin?
Are all Long Gourds of the Collins variety?

TIA

Steve

I planted two varieties this year..The typical collins variety and a yugoslavian variety. The yugoslavians maxed out at about 65". The yugoslavian plants were quicker to grow and set fruit. The yugoslavian fruit was almost a pale green yellow and the collins variety was dark green.

I am almost positive they are of the "Laganeria" genus, although a snake gourd is "Tricosanthes"

Sorry for not answering your questions...lol

I believe the gourd most of us are growing is "Longissima", also known as baton or snake gourd. The "Yugo" gourds may be a variation of this,or something else. Rather than growing skinny at the top tapering down to thick, like we've all seen, the "Yugo" seems to grow basically the same diameter all the way down. The longest gourds I have seen were the "Yugo" variety, and it appears that the new WR gourd is also a "Yugo". Warning: I received some seeds from P&P marked "Collins long gourd", and all I got were 2' long "cave man's clubs". Let the buyer beware!
