We all basically use the same time frame for planting AG pumpkins(based on a October weighoff)but do we have a planting date for tomato seeds.I am curious when you are starting your seeds indoors(based on an October weighoff)Any input appreciated.Phil

start the seeds now, at the latest! the plants need to be big enough to support the fruits when you set the tomatoes. Just set the tomatoes at a time that they are ready when you need them.

I have grown tomatoes for fair competition but not actually for giant tomatoes. We have to time our plants so we hit the fair at the beginning of the harvest. So, we transplant celebrity's into the field around the end of May. That way we miss the first few tomatoes that are usually not as perfect but we get the begining of the main fruiting with the best tomatoes. Targeting for Oct 2 is a little more difficult due to unpredictable temperatures in September. So, I'm going to plant different times this year to increase my chance at getting a giant. But, I'm going to guess that a June 1 transplant date will the best. Big Zac's are 80 days and Delicious are 77 days from transplant. This is still plenty early, but when you take our fertilizing practices into account I feel that we will extend the number of days to harvest due to higher nitrogen levels. Besides green vrs red doesn't matter right? A green tomato holds up better than a rotten one! I start my seeds inside 6 to 8 weeks prior to transplant. Its better a little late than to start too early and end up with leggy stunted plants. I've planted little 3" plants that outgrew 12" plants, the 3" performed better also. Good luck and no secrets for me. June 1 will be my center transplant date an I might transplant until July 1.
