ok, I know they will split after being dry followed by heavy rain. These were picked 2 days ago and left sitting outside in thr rain (5.5") on my deck. This morning they have all split. One even looks like the skin was peeled back from the split area. Why should they split when not attached to a plant?

sun or a freeze will cause this.

the answer is simple the tomato absorbed some the rain through it's skin and stem.
