If you are a giant tomato grower interested in an online contest, please post your name and address. Maybe we could begin a giant tomato contest here at the BP.com site. Something where you could enter for say $5 or $10 and all the money would go into a pool and 60% would go to the winner, 30% to second and 10% to third. Tomatoes could be weighed at any weigh-off using a certified scale or by a farm agent or other official on certified scale such as at the grocery store. There would not have to be a definite weigh-off date but rather a deadline such the GPC finale which I believe is October 7. Any ideas or interest? Since the GPC is not going to be giving prizes for tomatoes, maybe we could do our own thing.

I've never tried to grow a large tomato before and wouldn't know what variety would be best for that kind of venture...but it sounds fun and would be interested in learning more about growing large tomatos and a weigh off.

I am working out the details. Mark Korney in Buffalo, New york has agreed to hold the money and send out the checks to the winners. Also we are thinking that there should be a plaque or something for the three winners. 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I will post all of the details in a day or so. It seems that $10 will be the entry fee in order to properly reward the winner. I still need to find someone to be the judge which will entail deciding if the documentation of the weight and health of the tomato is adequate. The way to enter will be to simply send a check along with your name, address and phone number to Korney. More to follow.

I like it. I had a really nice one going last year and then the plants got late blight. It was still green when the plant started to go down and I ended up losing it. Had I been able to pick it for the weight at the time it happened rather than waiting for an arbitrary date... who knows? I'll keep watching for when you can get the details worked out.

There has not been a really overwhelming response to having an online tomato contest. But it isn't over yet. Marv
