Hello, For all of the extreme tomato growers out there what variety are you growing this year
I have never grown tomatoes for size before but I might try this year. I did a little research and it looks like there are a few variety's that are being used. The ones I found were: (Delicious, Mortgage lifter, and Big Zac) I'm sure there are more.. If you could tell me what variety you are growing this year and what worked best for you in the past that would be great.
Is giant tomato growing like AG growing where you keep the seeds out of your harvest and keep growing them and recrossing them, Or can you just go to Home depot and pick up a pack of (Delicious tomato seeds) and get good results?
IS there a Giant tomato growing website?
Any input is appreciated!!
Thanks

I'm gonna give the Burpee mortgage lifter another try this year. Last year i got one to 1 lb 10 oz. without any special treatment, which was more than double the weight of the second biggest tomato I'd ever grown to that point. I'd like to see what I could get with better treatment.

I gre my 4.48 Perry off a variety called "Church", the flesh of that tomato was extremely dense and what I believe makes for a heavy tomato. I've never had luck with Big Zac or Delicious but others have. Tomatoes i see promise in and will be growing this season:
BelMonte Amana Orange Carol Chyko's Big Paste Florida Pink Giant Belgium Ispolin Italian Tree Mortgage Lifter, Radiator Charlie’s, "Developed by M.C. Byles in the 1930’s" Neves Azorean Red a.k.a. NAR. Richardson Tidwell German Ultimate Giant
I host a Giant Tomato Virtual Weigh Off at www.perrysgreenhouse.com. We have some great prizes which include some incredible seeds. One of our sponsors, www.ExtremePumpkinStore.com has provided a first prize package which includes the book Growing Giant Tomatoes by Dr. Marvin Meisner. Anyone is welcome to participate. I am running low on seeds from my big tomatoes but I do try to provide seeds to all contestants.

I have two packs of 5 seeds left from my 4.48, they will be given to the next two members of my site who wish to compete in the VWO.
I have about 8 packs of 5 seeds each of my 3.36 and extras of a few other varieties. The BelMonte "heirloom variety" I grew last year held 23 tomatoes on it at once, all weighing between 1 - 2.5 pounds each. Nearly blemish free tomatoes that taste better that what is commonly found on the supermarket shelf. This variety is extremly hard to locate.
The Church that my 4.48 was grown off of was a real spitter, for weight only. I also have some Delicious you can try.
If anyone would like pumpkin seeds also, please send a SASB. I'll cover the stamp for tomato seeds. I'd prefer not to type my email in a post but you can find it in the diaries or you can register at the site mentioned above and Private message me there. ~Duane~
