I just realized the Supersteak tomato seeds from Burpee said on the packet- origin "China". I know a lot of stuff we use today is manufactured in China. But do we really have to have plants grown, and seeds from these plants imported here?
I feel like throwing them in the trash and looking for some home grown seeds.Does anybody have a source other then China for some Supersteak seeds?

Many of the hybrid seeds are made in China and that is the story with yours. It seems that the work is either too tedious or complex or does not pay enough to make the crosses here. So,if you want the seeds, they will be coming from China though the seed companies selling the seeds are based here in the USA. Sad but true. Marv

I called Burpee and I asked if they have any Supersteak seeds that are not form China? The said no..I asked why not grow them here in the USA? She said we have no more viable land..it is all use for condos..Give me a frickin' break! I pulled a seed pack from last year- Burpee Porterhouse Hybrid.. origin USA.I am trying to plant something with some size, that offers more disease resistance. Big Zacs die off to quick in my soil. What other varieties would you suggest?

It is surprising to see how many seeds are produced elsewhere. Just like everything else it gets outsourced to whomever can produce it the cheapest.

That's exactly what I found out Big moon as I have dug deeper into this...Chances are if you have picked up a ketchup bottle or used tomato sauce products, you sucked up a little bit of china with it.

I had a similar conversation with Tim Parks last weekend as it related to field pumpkin seeds, and getting a new variety produced. It's just too much cheaper over there. You basically couldn't even pay for the chemicals over here for what the entire cost per acre for production in China would amount to.

Only hope for the US is for the standard of living to improve in China & India. If the standard of living is the same here and in China it will not be cheaper to outsource and it will not matter where something is produced, manufacturing will probably come back near the time that China & India reach the same standard of living as the US.

I did, I will be growing for the first time, if they germinate and I can keep them alive.

I quit ordering from Burpee eons ago. I went to a florist convention in Seattle back in the seventies and one of the speakers there was from Burpee Seeds. His talk, complete with slides, was on the seed operation that they had just moved to central or south america. The reason he gave for moving the operation down there was because it was cheaper and they didn't have to pay for the labor like they did here. No viable land is a lame excuse. They have a purdy catalog though.

I was offered and accepted some 2010 pre-china seeds .Thanks Steve!
I called Park seed and asked them if any of their seed came came from China? they basically said Hell no! So I bought a couple of packs from..The bottom line is , if it matters to you, check where these companies are getting and growing their seeds

Based on this information I will never buy Burpee seeds again.
Not saying I ever purchased many from them to begin with but I cannot condone this.
