hey everyone,got my first flower on my megamarv plant looks to be about a cenemeter wide,lol it is in a bucket right now might transplant into ground soon??? but dont want it too abort!!! anyone else got a flowers yet??? pizza

pinched off all of my first flowers on all the plants, the second sets are just starting, i will pinch those off also, and go for the 3rd set of flowers to grow if there high enough on the plant, boy was that tuff to do, there where some nice size blossoms there.

my mistake it was on the brutis magnum tomato,its a big single,i plan on eating,lol, i still cant bring my self to picnh them im gonna grow them out even if the plant is small!!!! pizza

marv, do you think a tomato has a chance if its the first set on a plant to grow anything big? with no plant behind it to grow? i had giant blossoms on the first and second sets, but only a foot to a foot and a half off the ground, i think in your book you said the big tomatos come at 3' to 4' off the ground?
i do not want to waste any energy growing a tomato a foot off the ground, if it will not grow anything big? what are your thoughts? can we grow a giant off the first or second set of blossoms? i have never tried this?? thanks ,scott.

A grower with many world records told me. If the first set doesn't have a mega-blossom...he yanks the plant!

but did he grow those records so low to the ground, with no plant behind it, just wondering if anyone has grown a mater so low?? it would be cool if thats the case, i would love to get them started early before it got way to hot! thanks for the info!!!another secret!!! maybe????

scott, i had a mater on my big zac plants first year in the fall(sept) grow about a foot from the ground was 4 blossoms but never got big ended up bein a pound maybe a little more due to temps getting too cold,im wondering if u pinch off mega blooms does the plant keep produceing them or do most big tomato blooms are the first ones u get????? sounds like marv dont pinch any off just the single blooms and small ones???? my plant is 2-3 foot tall and in a pot moveing to garden this week,and started a batch of megamarvs last week for a last ditch effort ,lol,plus the leadbeatters seeds are sprouting good hope they produce!!! pizza

Most, if not all, big tomatoes seem to come at three feet and below. The very first level of blossoms often produces the biggest tomato. That is why you should let the first ones grow to see how they will do. These are not pumpkins. They don't seem to need a lot of plant behind them to get big. It is more about the big blossom than the size of the plant.

I read somewhere (from Brad Wursten I think) that the (sink)isn't as critical to tomatoes as it is on Pumpkins for instance. That's why you don't need "plant behind" the tomato

john, i always pinched off the flowers until the plant reached 3', with all of this said, i could of had even more on that plant last year, i remember pinching off one that was the size of a dime, oops..... last year i tried to see if it was just the roots that grew the maters, i took a 5.58 timm and got 2 good maters growing at about 3', then i cut the plant off above them, they did not grow much to speak of, so i think the a lot of the energy comes from the plant above, this would explain what we are talking about?

boom boom,what ever u do dont do what i did my first year,i was so obsessed with getting a pic of the perfect megabloom i was turning them for just the right angle for a pic and broke 4-5 nice ones off!!! lol,never again i take pics far away now!!!

Lets say that I like to bury my plants at least a foot into the ground. Do we start the 3 feet from the ground up, or count the foot under the ground?

Gritch, I think you misread what I was saying. I said that most big tomatoes come below the first three feet of the plant, not at or above. Also, the part under the ground is called the root. How tall a plant is measured from the ground up. Lets not make it harder than it already is. lol. Marv
