I have said this before but I feel I have to say it again. When you are naming your tomato seed it would be really great if you included the name of the variety if it is an heirloom or originally from a hybrid seed. Any tomato originating from Big Zac, Delicious, Megamarv etc should have that in the seed name. Then the history of the seed becomes clear. If we don't do this in 5 years we will have no idea what is what. We need to be able to know we are growing Big Zac, Delicious etc. An example name would be 8.1 Delicious (Hunt) 2013. THen we would know the seed came from an 8 pound tomato grown by Hunt in 2013 from variety Delicious. The next guy growing the seed would change only Hunt to his and the year it was grown. Tomatoes are not pumpkins. Most of us are not hand pollinating them. They are heirlooms or whatever in the case of Big Zac or any other hybrid used.

I agree 100%, I have some tomatoes planted this year I have no clue what variety they are without doing some research and maybe even contacting the grower.

You are right Marvin, but I prefer that the name should be 8.1 Hunt (delicious) 2013, because after all the growers do the hard work, the variety only itself doesn't make us to be a champions :)

I too agree with Tuija concerning grower name first then the strain.
As long as the actual strain or variety is in the description for tracking purposes then I see it as honoring the grower while acknowledging the variety the grower used.

I have no problem with who comes first or last or in the middle as long as all the info is available. Now if only everyone will actually do it.

Isn't there way too many seeds out there that are not labelled that way? I'm growing 8 different seeds from 4 different growers and none of the seeds were labelled that way so I have no idea (and likely the growers don't either) which variety they came from. It's a great idea if we would have started doing this years ago.

It sure would make it easier to identify the strain. 8.1 Hunt (delicious) sounds great to us, but it's not happening in our patch this year. Good luck.

It may already be too late. The recommendation was made at the start by several growers. A lot of people would not listen. I believe a lot of people still will not listen. My plan now is to name my seed properly and not grow any that are not. It would be great if everyone agreed to take this route. Deal only with properly named seeds and if you get something big, name it properly.

I started last year with my Big Zac 2 lB 8.6 OZ tomato and this year I will have my 4.01 Diehl (Mega Marv) 2013 and my 4.03 Diehl (Mega Marv) 2013 seeds named accordingly.
I would be very wise to adhere to Marv's naming process and make it policy.

Great advice Marv!
Since I share a lot of tomato seeds, a naming convention I've adopted includes 2+ generations, something like:
MegaMarv (2.678 Thurber 2012)(5.51 Meisner 2011) Delicious (1.874 Thurber 2012)(5.41 Landry 2011) Big Zac (3.94 Pennington 2010)(7.18 Harp 2009)
With seeds from more than 90 3+ lb. tomatoes grown by others, plus seeds from hundreds I've produced, I have to be able to keep track of lineages in my database. Or I would go nuts...
