It has not made it on the GPC page yet. Has anyone been in touch with John lately ? I tried to email him several times.

So as of now, I guess it is unofficial, :(

Zappa, What seed did your 5.59 come from? Was it Big Zac or other?

Thanks

Zappa,
A HUGE congrat's on that monster.

Even if you didn't get it in the GPC contest after you have it officially weighed it still counts as a valid giant.

Fantastic Zappa!

Master P, that is what I needed to hear, thanks.

Tim, it was grown from the 5.08 Maston 2012, big zac of coarse. I was amazed that such small plants, only waist high, could produce these two beasts !

I'm not overly concerned about it being in the GPC , as I have a bigger one still growing, that is going to a weigh off.

PA_J, and others,
can I get viable seeds from this one if I let it ripen, or do they need to ripen on the vine ?
It is all green and hard as a rock, will it ripen ?

Thanks all.
I will post some pics after the oct 12th weigh off.

Zappa,

If you are able to get the tomato close to fully ripe off the vine that's just fine. Is there a small amount of the tomato that has begun to ripen?

Here's what you can do; If you have quite a few small green tomatoes as well as your 5.59, take kitchen bowl and place the 5.59 in the middle. Take the smaller green tomatoes and surround the 5.59 with them including covering the top of the 5.59 with a couple of smaller ones as well.

The ethylene gas released by the smaller green tomatoes will assist in ripening your 5.59.

If you don't have any green tomatoes then there is another way.

get a large plastic bag like a smaller garbage bag and place your 5.59 inside along with three or four semi ripe bananas. As these bananas ripen and release ethylene gas they will influence the 5.59 to ripen.

Also be sure to check your 5.59 daily for any signs of mold beginning to form at the stem. If you see some, just remove the mold by wiping it away with a q-tip and place it back into the bag with the bananas.

Let me know how this is working for you.

Thanks all !
My bigger mater turned out to be a bust, :(
It was one of those crazy big ones that was able to be split apart. It did have one stem but basically two tomatoes. I guess this is rather common, but being a first timer, I did not know any better.
Next year, I will rip it off the stem right away to give all the juice to the bigger one, lol.

Still, I am very happy, the 5.59 was no doubt 1 big one.
