Hi
I am in Australia and looking for advice on how to grow heavy tomatoes.
The record in Australia is only 1.8kg or 3.96 pounds. Partly due to it not being a big hobby and partly due to our limited access to big seeds. I have some 1.3 kg seed I am going to grow and am looking for the best techniques and advice from you, the expert growers.
I have a good nitrogen rich bed ready.
Do I bury the vine?
Allow more then one fruit to grow?
Foliar spray nutrient or root drench?
Only pollinate fused flowers?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Well the nitrogen rich is usually not good for maters you will have bunch of vine.
&lets say plant is 1ft tall.bury 9-10 inches in ground.
Its good to start plants in pots so you can bury deep.

The book "" How To Grow Giant Tomatoes"" Written by Dr. Marv Meisner is the bible of giant tomato growing.

He is also an active member here and goes simply by the name Marv on this site.

The "" to the letter "" adherence to this books methods gave me the knowledge to compete at this level in my first season.

I cannot emphasize this books importance enough to those willing to put into action what proven growers have done to achieve very heavy weights.
Proven seed, proven techniques,good weather, a bit of hard work and a little luck will give you what you seek.

I agree. Get the book. It's well worth it. I doubt we would have had the knowledge to get our tomato to 7.33 without it.

I'll get the book then, I have done a little reading and everyone says how important a tool the book is in growing for weight. I'll be putting updates of my progress in my grow diary as I progress. Thanks for the responses.

I was thinking perhaps if I try and pollinate the flower with another plant to possibly produce some sort of hybrid vigour. Is this being done much? It makes sense obviously would require a removing the male portion of the flower before it had viable pollen, I'm guessing a couple days before it opens. I might attempt some controlled crosses.

The hybrid vigor would be in the plants from the seed produced by this year's fruit.
