My tomatoes are starting to ripen (regular tomatoes, not giants). The problem is the tomatoes are growing great, but when they start to change color the skin is cracking. What is causing this and what can I do to prevent it? I havent been able to harvest a tomato without a crack yet!!

You are seeing what is called catfacing.

Some cultivars and varieties, including many heirlooms, are more susceptible to catfacing.

There are many reasons for this but since you are in PA like I am I'm thinking this is from an overabundance of rain that we have received over the course of the last month. The entire state for the month of June was notably above average for precipitation.

Too much water being absorbed by the plant will cause tomatoes on the plant to swell thus breaking the outer layers of the skin causing what your seeing.

There are other factors that cause catfacing but in my opinion this is the cause for your particular situation.

Ok. I was thinking that was the cause but was not sure. Thanks for the info! Here's hoping the rain calms down a bit for us!

You can cut tomatoes from the vine when the epidermis is showing color and let them ripen inside at room temp. This will stop the cracking you get from too much rain. It will also stop critters from taking a bite out of your fruit.

Ok,I will try that as well. I will be trimming up the tomatoes today so I will snatch up any that are starting to show color. Thanks again!
