Marv, I was thinking that the megamarv in the megazac was from delicious heritage..but now i am unsure. I know you are a very concerned with documentation of variety, so can you reveal the genetics of the megamarv. As we start to breed the varieties it could be important.

MegaMarv is not a cross. It is an heirloom probably originally from Italy. I got it in Canada as a no name heirloom from an old Italian guy at The Great Tomato Hunt. It never had a name and I have long ago lost his if he ever gave it to me. I have grown it now for nearly 10 years.

By the way, I have crossed it over the years with Big Zac, Delicious, Brutus Magnum. I got nice tomatoes but not yet any really big ones. Others have crossed it as well.

thanks marv....another question...since their are a few of the tomato growers that are capable of making many crosses...how should we name our crosses?...thru time I can see myself crossing...Bigzac, Megamarv, Delicious, Domingo, Brutus Magnum, Russian Oxheart and a new one that i found out about today..Ispanskiy Gigant. There could be thousands and thousands of crosses....does each one deserve a name..or could there just be one category for variety...suggesting Wixom for a multicrossed variety

This naming of crosses is totally up to the grower. As more people make and name crosses, think of the confusion that will result as they give out seeds and then people name the seeds from those tomatoes after themselves as is now the case. When I cross something like lets say Delicious and MegaMarv, I might call it Delmar. The important thing is that someone somewhere keeps track of what the two varieties were that were crossed to make the new tomato. I doubt this will be possible since now if someone grows say a Big Zac they call the new seed something like Smith 4.98 and all is lost. If that is done when only one variety is grown, think about when it is a cross.
