If you take a look at the tomato weigh-off data from last year, you will see that for most tomatoes over 4 pounds the ancestry has been updated.

LOL... MY 6.23 megazac is being called a big zac but they put the megazac name under mother seed ? And the same thing on my 6.13 megazac they put the veriety in the mother seed colum!!!

Have a question if u used ga3 for pollibating I would put 6.23 konieczny x ga3 as its NT pollinated with pollen, Will get no seeds

If you used those two to make a new F1 you would identify it as a hybrid, ga3 x 6.23 Konieczny(BZ). The seed would be unstable as an F1 hybrid.

It has BZ ancestry in it. 6.13 Konieczny is one of those names that gives no hint of ancestry. Also, it is not so easy to spell. How many generations are you out? Is the 6.23 an F2 or F3 seed?

The megazac is the 5.51 megamarv x 8.41 MacCoy(bigzac) grew to 9.6 oz.grown in my bacement. The 6.23 and 6.13 are the first offspring from this cross so i would call it F 1?

The seeds from your first tomato, the 9.6 ounce one, the actual cross, are F1. The seeds from the 6 pounders, grown from those F1 seeds are both F2, second generation of the original cross. So when you give away those seeds you will be giving F2. The seeds will not really be stable until you reach F5. So each year you grow them they become a bit more stable and you save seeds as you go along should from the tomatoes that have the characteristics you desire. Here it is size.

Guys. It is becoming more and more difficult to figure out what came from where on the basis of a seed's name if the ancestry is not included in the name. How do you think anyone will be able to tell in the future what, for example, a Wixon Slammer, a 6.23 Korniecny or a 7.05 Porkchop really is. You might love the names but they just are not informative. And then what do you think happens when people start crossing them? For instance, what do you name a tomato variety that was created by crossing a Wixon Slammer with a 6.23 Kornieczny?

We would have to keep track of these ever increasing tomato names the same way we keep track of everything else in these modern time. Yet another cumbersome data base that one could access the information. I'm growing a Wixom "MegaMutt" this year. Hell, 1-5-10 years from now nobody in the general growing population will know where this originated. I see your point Marv but I don't have the time and I'm sure most anybody else doesn't have or want to make the time for a better tracking system.

Here are my gpc entry forms from last years tomatoes and how my crosses were made.
Do i need to fill this form out differently or do we need to re-write the early tomato entry form.
I don't see anything that i could have done different on my sumission form so im in favor of rewriting the entry form to make it clear for the grower to fill out and for the gpc to collect the infomation clear and corect.

I saw the entry forms and they were as complete as they could possibly be. All the needed information was there. I guess who ever transcribed them failed to put the information down is such a way that it could be viewed by other growers. The form submitted could not have been more complete. The weigh-off listing for GPC failed to show any of this. I have no workable solution.

The GPC is much more interested in AGs & Giant Squash, so it is not that surprising that it was not filled in correctly.
The solution to this would be for the grower to be able to input the info directly.
The new GPC officers may be more approachable about this than previously.
In addition I think there should be a curator to straighten things out.
I think you would be the ideal candidate for that Marv maybe with Dale (seamsfaster) as your standin/alternate.
I wouldn't mind helping out with it.

For several years now Dale and I have worked on correcting and updating the tomato lists. With the lack of data and the crossing of already unknown ancestry tomatoes the job will become nearly impossible. I think we need some new blood. Last year we tried to update the entry sheets. For some reason it did not work. Some growers have openly stated that they are too busy to keep track of all this stuff. I have not been active in the GPC and don't grow pumpkins anymore. If you have the energy and the perseverance then maybe you are the man Materdoc.
