Found out that my friend from the gardening plots at the local college here in my home town told me that a nursery owner in a near by town of at least 40 miles away east of dodge city. Told him that his father's father created at least 3 giant tomatoes in 1890-1912.. And one was a cross between a green tomato and pink ponderosa, a giant white variety called Größe Weiß and a yellow German variety also called Gelb Größe. And it is said that the man's son is the next one to pass it to future generations to the family. And the white one grows to be 5 to 7 pounds depends on the weather. And they grow from seed at 7 days after their planted and take 73 days to grow from seed to fruit. And the tomatoes also have the distinctive megabloom on it too on the 3rd set of new leaves as it vines out to produce and in fact the family never put their seeds in catalogs either.

Call me a skeptic. But I hear this all the time at the when carving displays, or at the weigh offs. They know someone who knew someone that used to grow bigger pumpkins than the ones on the podium or display. I ask them what year that was and they say the year. I then tell them the world record for that time period was 450 lbs. The reply back is they never weighed them. They just know they were bigger.

For me to be a believer I need to see the tomato on a scale with a tape measure around it. I once actually believed the variety 6 Pounds actually grew 6 pound tomatoes.
